Open Educational Resources

A resource series is a sub-set of resources within a collection. The following list of the resource series are available to guest users. The resource series are managed and updated by the NCLOR staff.

Bozeman Science – This video series maintained by Paul Andersen. The topics included in the BozemanScience Series are: Anatomy and Physiology, AP Biology, Biology, AP Chemistry, Chemistry, AP Physics, Earth Science and Physics.

C3BC – Introductory bioscience courses collection from The Community College Consortium for Biosciences Credentials (c3bc).
CK-12 – This resource series is a collection of free Flexbooks (eBooks) offered by the CK-12 Foundation.
CrashCourse – CrashCourse is a YouTube based educational channel that creates free, high-quality educational videos used by teachers and learners of all kinds.
Cool Tools for Teaching Online (SREB) – As part of the SREB State Virtual Schools Alliance in partnership with the AT&T Foundation, a list of New Media/Web 2.0 Tools has been prepared especially for SREB and online teachers by Chris O’Neal, Faculty Associate for the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

DigitalLearning.org  – This series is a grant-funded project to create an online hub for digital literacy support and training made available from the Public Library Association.
Duke Center of Excellence in Geriatric Nursing Education  – The resources included in this collection are vetted by the educators at the center. The resources represent the latest educational research and practice in geriatric nursing

EICC Engineering Tech. Simulations – The EICC Engineering Tech. Simulations content is a segment of a Department of Labor grant awarded to the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) of Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott.
Elon Polls – Elon University Polling Results for North Carolina
Emerging Technology Resources – A series showcases the resources in the NCLOR about some new and emerging job fields.
ESL Virtual Library – A set of English as a second language resources made available from the NCCCS.

Georgia Virtual Learning  – Georgia Virtual Learning (GVL) is a large online repository of learning content made available from the Georgia Department of Education. The virtual courses serve a wide array of student learning styles through interactive and engaging learning content that’s designed for best practice and flexibility.
GaTech Biology  – Two OER courses made available from Georgia Tech Biology.
Google Education Training – This is a collection of items for using Google tools in education.

H

Harvard Open Learning Initiative – The Harvard Extension School’s Open Learning Initiative brings a selection of noncredit online courses featuring Harvard faculty to the public for free.

Harvard’s Natural Science Lecture Demonstrations Series – provides visual demonstrations for a wide variety of topics to supplement lectures in physics, chemistry, astronomy, and biology.

History Animated – A collection of depictions of the key naval and land battles in WWII (Pacific Battles), US Civil War and the US Revolution using animation technology.

Iowa Learns – This is a digital repository of teaching and learning resources. The repository provides an environment for educators to search for, use and share quality educational resources. The majority of the Iowa content has been aligned to the North Carolina Essential Standards but is open to everyone to use.
INTELECOM – The INTELECOM Online Resources Network is a hosted and supported digital repository and subscription database of academic video clips – streamed on demand – for use in support of online, hybrid and face-to-face classes.

K

Khan Academy – This is a large k-12 and Higher Education video tutorial lecture series. Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. They a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere.

Kurzgesagt.org– Kurzgesagt: German for “In a nutshell“ is a Munich-based YouTube channel and design studio with a unique perspective on design, color and storytelling.

Learn NC – Educational resources for North Carolina K-12 educators.

M

Math Open Reference – Math Open Reference uses interactive tools and compelling animations to provide an engaging way to learn and explore geometry.
MIT Open Courseware – This series is a collection of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology OpenCourseWare course materials that reflect undergraduate and graduate subjects taught at MIT.
Medical Billing and Coding – This series explains the basic vocabulary, concepts, and principles that guide the billing and coding professions.

N

NASA  – The NASA collection includes material on the history of the organization, past and current space missions.
NEH Wake Tech CC Grant – A series of resources used in the National Endowment for the Humanities grant “America’s Wars: Individual Experience and Cultural Memory” Project from Wake Tech CC.
NOAA – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has developed a set of 15 interactive multimedia presentations and learning activities that address topics ranging from Chemosynthesis and Hydrothermal Vent Life and Deep-sea Benthos to Food, Water and Medicine from the Sea.
NCCCS – ESL Virtual Library – A collection of the official items used by North Carolina BioNetwork.
NC Department of Cultural Resources – The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources has a large quantity of online educational resources. With this in mind they have created the Educational Resources Collection available in the NCLOR.
NC School of Science and Mathematics – This is a series of resources including graphics, interactive animations, videos, lesson plans, and professional development made available by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
NCVPS – The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is a supplemental service to the public schools of North Carolina.
Nobel Prize Education – A set of learning resources that includes: Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace Prize related material.
Notre Dame Uni. OpenCourseWare – Notre Dame OpenCourseWare is a free and open digital publication of course materials form Notre Dame University.
NOVA – A set of 830 resources from the Extended Learning Institute (ELI) from Northern Virginia Community College System (NOVA).

O

Open Course Library – The Open Course Library is a collection of expertly developed educational materials – including textbooks, syllabi, course activities, readings, and assessments.
OpenIntro – OpenIntro is a open educational website that offers three textbooks. All are free to download, all are available in print, and all offer supporting teaching tools.
Open Yale Courses – Open Yale Courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University.
Open SUNY – Open SUNY Textbooks is an open access textbook publishing initiative established by State University of New York libraries and supported by SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grants.
Operation Link – Operation Link is an AmeriCorps, in partnership with East Carolina University, S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) mentoring program for elementary and middle grades students, with a priority given to serving military youth.
Oregon State Open Textbooks – OSU’s open educational resource initiative.

Periodic Table of VideosThis resource series is a collection of short video clips that explain all 118 elements. This project was devised by Brady Haran, a BBC-trained video journalist, who had spent a year filming University of Nottingham scientists at work.
PhET Simulations – PhET provides fun, interactive, research-based simulations of physical phenomena for free.
Princeton University Lectures – These resources are video captures of their famous public lecture series and include lectures given by Tom Brokaw, Noam Chomsky, Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and Dr. Cornel West just to name a few. The subjects included in this series are broad and include: Political Science, Finance, Biology, Literature, Religion, and Physics.
PythonLearn.org is intended to collect a set of generic Python Learning Resources to allow self-paced learning of the Python Language. The materials from this site are collected from several courses at the University of Michigan that use Python. The instructor for this course is Chuck Severance of the University of Michigan. This content covers both 2.x and 3.x versions of Python.

R

Read Write Think – This K-12 series includes 54 student interactive resources that focus on all aspects of literacy including literature, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and speech.

Science Friday – The videos in this series include topics in the subjects of: Arts, Biology, Chemistry, Design, Earth Science, Engineering, Food Science, Health, and Physics.

SciShow – Space is a space science video series available from Hank Green, Caitlin Hofmeister and Reid Reimers.
Smithsonian Education – The Smithsonian Education resource series is a collection of the “Smithsonian in Your Classroom” and the Smithsonian “Art to Zoo” publications as well as the Smithsonian Lessons grade level packages.
Stanford Univ. Seminars – The Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD), a part of the school of Engineering, connects professionals worldwide to the research and teaching of Stanford University faculty. This is a seminar series with a wide range of topics but focused on engineering.
Sumanas, Inc. – Sumanas, Inc. was founded in 1994 with a commitment to developing accurate high-impact interactive products for higher education. Their goal is to design and produce innovative educational solutions, using CD-ROM, web, and other technologies. Sumanas offers a robust selection of content and services that are directed at enhancing the learning experience.

T

TED Ed – This series is collection of resources made available from TED-Ed. These resources are short, award-winning animated videos about ideas that spark the curiosity of learners. Some of the subject included in this series are: mathematics, biology, history, literature, and health.
Tufts Open Course Ware – Tufts OpenCourseWare is part of a new educational movement initiated by MIT that provides free access to course content for everyone online. Tufts’ course offerings demonstrate the University’s strength in the life sciences in addition to its multidisciplinary approach, international perspective and underlying ethic of service to its local, national and international communities.

UMass Boston- Open Course WareUMass Boston OCW is a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners world wide.
UNC Cancer NetworkThe mission of the UNC Cancer Network is to provide scalable mechanisms for delivering oncology-related programs in education and research to healthcare practitioners, practitioners-in-training, and the public that will lead to reductions in morbidity and mortality from cancer and cancer-related illness in North Carolina.
University of Cambridge – In this series, you can find out about some of the research, discoveries and innovations that take place at Cambridge University.
University of Minnesota Libraries Open Textbooks – A collection of open eTextbook made available from the University of Minnesota Libraries.
University of Nottingham – HELM Open – Open health resources available from University of Nottingham.
University of Wisconsin Pressbooks – Small collection of open eTextbook made available from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Virtual Cell Animations – The goal of the Virtual Cell  animation project is to create high-quality animations of selected molecular and cellular processes that support student learning.

W

Wisc-Online – Wisc-Online is a digital library of Web-based learning resources.
World Science Festival – A collection of Biology, Cosmology, Physics, and Technology video from the World Science Foundation.
