Google for Education training courses added to NCLOR OER collection

Today, two new courses were made available from the Google Education Training Center within the NCLOR’s open educational resources collection. The Google Education Training Center offers two complete courses on how to use Google tools in the classroom. Content in the Fundamentals and Advanced courses is organized by three themes:

1. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
2. Increase Efficiency and Save Time
3. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Within these three themes they have a number of units. Each Unit is then made up of multiple lessons, each represented by a dot which turns green once they’ve been completed.

Important: You need a google account to access some of the resources associated with each lesson.

To access these resources, you can do any of the following:

TED Ed series added to NCLOR

Today, 240 videos from TED Ed were made available in the Open Educational Resources collection in the NCLOR. TED-Ed is TED’s (Technology, Entertainment and Design) youth and education initiative. Most of the resources made available are TED-Ed Originals. These resources are short, award-winning animated videos about ideas that spark the curiosity of learners. The videos also include quizzes, more detailed information, and a discussion area under the: Think, Dig Deeper, Discuss links respectively. Some of the subjects included in this series are: mathematics, biology, history, literature, and health.

UCI Open Content added to OER collection

Today, seventy resources from UCI Open was added to the open educational resource series collection in the NCLOR. The University of California, Irvine’s UCI Open is a web-based repository of various UC Irvine courses and video lectures from UC Irvine faculty, seminar participants, and instructional staff. While the great majority of courses are drawn from graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs, some were originally produced under grant funding to serve specific needs in California and elsewhere. UCI Open is open and available to the world for free.

The resources added in this series are complete courses that include materials such as; lecture videos, presentations, handouts, and practice assessments. The course resources in this series are from disciplines that include: Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Social Ecology, and Social Sciences.

Open SUNY Textbooks Added to NCLOR

Today, 6 new eTextbooks were added to the open educational resources collection of the NCLOR. Open SUNY Textbooks is an open access textbook publishing initiative established by State University of New York libraries and supported by SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grants. This pilot initiative publishes high-quality, cost-effective course resources by engaging faculty as authors and peer-reviewers, and libraries as publishing service and infrastructure.

The pilot launched in 2012, providing an editorial framework and service to authors, students and faculty, and establishing a community of practice among libraries.

The titles of the added ebooks are:

This week, the  UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia resources were updated in the NCLOR. Over 2,300 resources were added to the 14,000 resources already available. These PBS Learning Media resources are made available to North Carolina Community College users through a partnership between UNC-TV and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The collection is closed and can only be made available to current NCCCS users in North Carolina.

NCCCS users will have access to over 16,200 media-rich resources especially designed for teachers and students including self-guided lessons, lesson plans, videos, interactives, and hundreds of images. Some of the content added in this update include video clips from series like; NOVA, FRONTLINE, American Experience, PBS NewsHour, and Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson, just to name a few.

Career and Technical Ed. related resources add to Wisc-Online collection

A career and technical education related set of resources from Wisc-Online has been added to the NCLOR. Forty-six new learning objects have been included in this update. The resources include topics like; Barbering, Cosmetology, Early Childhood Education, Instructional Assistant, Housekeeping Management, Criminal Justice, and Bar-tending are available in this series. The learning objects in this series have been designed and developed by a team of instructional designers, editors, technicians, and student interns from the Wisconsin Technical College System.
