CrashCourse Video Series Added to OER Collection

On May 5th, the CrashCourse educational video series was added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. CrashCourse is a YouTube based educational channel that creates free, high-quality educational videos used by teachers and learners of all kinds. CrashCourse is a educational video series created by John and Hank Green. Over 660 resources were added in the courses of World Mythology, Computer Science, Sociology, Media Literacy, Statistics, Film, History, Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, Psychology, Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Philosophy, Astronomy, and U.S. Government and Politics. This series has helped changed attitudes towards education by creating a community of learners who are looking for more than just help passing a test. Each course includes animated videos to explain course topics in an easy to understand manner.

Georgia Virtual Learning Content Added to OER Collection in NCLOR

Today, over 1100 individual learning modules were added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. This series has been made available from the Georgia Department of Education. The Georgia Virtual Learning (GVL) is a large online repository of learning content used for online instruction. The virtual courses included in this series serve a wide array of student learning styles through interactive and engaging learning content that’s designed for best practice and flexibility. The resources included in this series are the “shared” or the open educational resources created for the Georgia Virtual Learning instruction. There are 94 complete courses included in this collection, in subjects such as: Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education, Fine Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, and World Languages.

The courses were created by Georgia Department of Education faculty. They are organized in modular format (SoftChalk) with audio/video interactive features and built in navigation. Specific attention was paid regarding ADA compliance with the inclusion of closed caption/audio features as well as universal design.

The courses included in this series are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 Unported License.

CyArk 3D Objects Resource Series Added to the Open Collection

Today, 122 new resources from CyArk.org has been added to the NCLOR’s Open Educational Resources collection. CyArk was founded in 2003 to ensure heritage sites are available to future generations while making them uniquely accessible today. CyArk operates internationally as a non-profit organization with the mission of using new technologies to create a free, 3D online library of the world’s cultural heritage sites before they are lost to natural disasters, destroyed by human aggression or ravaged by the passage of time. The subjects included in this series are; Archeology, Architecture, U.S. History, World History and Historic Preservation.

More Cambridge University Videos Added to the NCLOR

Today, thirty-five video resources from the University of Cambridge were added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. In this series, you can find out about some of the research, discoveries, and innovations that take place at Cambridge University. In particular, Cambridge Ideas which is an ongoing series of short documentaries that present Cambridge’s cutting edge research together with comment and opinion on matters of global significance. Additions to the Cambridge Shorts and Curious Objects series have also been added to the series.

The topics included in this series are:

UCI Open Content added to OER collection

Today, seventy resources from UCI Open was added to the open educational resource series collection in the NCLOR. The University of California, Irvine’s UCI Open is a web-based repository of various UC Irvine courses and video lectures from UC Irvine faculty, seminar participants, and instructional staff. While the great majority of courses are drawn from graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs, some were originally produced under grant funding to serve specific needs in California and elsewhere. UCI Open is open and available to the world for free.

The resources added in this series are complete courses that include materials such as; lecture videos, presentations, handouts, and practice assessments. The course resources in this series are from disciplines that include: Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Social Ecology, and Social Sciences.

Khan Academy Series Updated w/ Computer Sci, History & Grammar content

The NCLOR’s  Khan Academy resource series has been updated with 94 new video tutorial resources.  All of the videos available from Khan Academy are now available in a tutorial-based format with built in navigation. Many of the resources have been tagged to an NCCCS combined course library course number.  The disciplines covered in this collection update include Computer Science, U.S. History, and Grammar.  Each discipline can be sorted by subject and topic.

Each tutorial in this series is a digestible chunk of information, approximately 10 minutes long, closed captioned, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

Cambridge University Video Series Added to the NCLOR

Today, seventy-five resources from the University of Cambridge were added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. In this series, you can find out about some of the research, discoveries and innovations that take place at Cambridge University. In particular, a collection of short films in which top researchers reveal some of their latest findings and discuss subjects ranging from energy to disappearing languages, and policing the streets to the future of robotics.

The topics included in this series are:

• Nano-materials Up Close – images from a electron microscope

CK-12 Resource Series Updated in NCLOR

Due to a resource reorganization at CK-12, the NCLOR needed to re-catalog all the resources available from the CK-12 foundation. The FlexBooks® currently available (72), have now been downloaded to the NCLOR directly in PDF and ePub formats. To view the files you will need a pdf reader or an iOS device, Android device or ePub reader to view the ePub files. All older versions of the resources in the CK-12 series have been archived.

FlexBook® textbooks are CK-12’s open source digital textbooks.

The CK-12 Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce the cost of textbook materials for the K-12 market both in the U.S. and worldwide. The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources has added a large collection of its educational resources to the NCLOR. Topics included in this collection are: Agriculture, Anthropology, Architecture, Business, Civics, Cultural studies, Government, Journalism, Literature, Performing arts, Public health, Religion, Sociology, State history, Transportation, and Visual arts. There are over 2100+ resources available in this collection.

The INTELECOM Online Resources Network is a hosted and supported digital repository and subscription database of academic video clips – streamed on demand – for use in support of online, hybrid and face-to-face classes. The NCLOR staff has recently added 17 free videos representing a sample of the INTELECOM content collection.
