More UNC-TV & PBS LearningMedia resources added to NCLOR

This week, the  UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia resources were updated in the NCLOR. Over 2,300 resources were added to the 14,000 resources already available. These PBS Learning Media resources are made available to North Carolina Community College users through a partnership between UNC-TV and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The collection is closed and can only be made available to current NCCCS users in North Carolina.

NCCCS users will have access to over 16,200 media-rich resources especially designed for teachers and students including self-guided lessons, lesson plans, videos, interactives, and hundreds of images. Some of the content added in this update include video clips from series like; NOVA, FRONTLINE, American Experience, PBS NewsHour, and Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson, just to name a few.

The subjects included in this collection are: Agricultural and Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Business, Career and Technical Education, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Health Medical Sciences, Information Sciences, Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

This collection is only available to the NCCCS faculty. NC K-12 users have their own PBS collection available.

NCDPI adds IowaLearns math content to NCLOR

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Education has made 250+ math related resources available in the NCLOR. IowaLearns.org is a digital repository of teaching and learning resources. The repository provides an environment for educators to search for, use and share quality educational resources. The majority of the Iowa content has been aligned to the North Carolina Essential Standards but is open to everyone to use.

To access this series, you can do any of the following:

• Log into the NCLOR and click on “Browse by Resource Series” and then the IowaLearns series.
• If you are NCCCS faculty, you can add the links to the resources directly to your LMS based course. (learn how)
• Simply, click Iowa Learns to view the series as a guest.

NROC webinar avaliable

NROC hosted an informational webinar on October 29th. This webinar reviews the vast collections available from the NROC Project through the NCLOR. Beth Pickett, NROC Project HippoCampus Product Manager, provides a whirlwind tour of some of the 3,000 + objects across subjects. Jonathon Sweetin, NCLOR Systems Administrator, demonstrates how to easily include objects from NCLOR into your Blackboard or Moodle courses.

The NROC Project is a community-guided, non-profit project focused on new models of digital content development, distribution, and use.

Art of Problem Solving series added to the NROC collection

The Art of Problem Solving series has now been loaded to the NCLOR. Art of Problem Solving develops math educational materials for high-performing math students in grades 6-12. The subjects included in this series are: Arithmetic, Pre-Algebra, and Counting & Probability. This content is made available from the through the NROC collection. The topics included in the subjects are: Data and Statistics, Decimals, Equations and Inequalities, Exponents, Fractions and more.

NROC Algebra I (2011) and Developmental Math Courses Updated

Open to NCCCS Faculty Only

NROC Algebra I (2011) and Developmental Math courses have been updated in the NCLOR. The Developmental Math course was updated with 4 new units: Rational Expressions, Radical Expressions and Quadratic Equations, Functions, and Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. The course content is now available for browsing by complete unit (1-18) or by topic. This will help faculty find specific resources quickly and efficiently. Some link fixes to current resources and additional resource metadata were also included in this update.

NROC’s Developmental Math Program is designed to be used with students striving to meet college entrance requirements. The program has pre- and post-assessment features that help direct students to the content needed to close their proficiency gaps, and offers video, audio, interactive simulations, puzzles, and other instructional approaches that engage a variety of learning styles and attitudes. The NROC courses utilize various combinations of video, animation, still graphics, simulations, text and audio.

Many of the Developmental Math and Algebra I resources have been tagged to the appropriate DMA 010-080 student learning outcomes.

VLC Developmental Math Course Content added

The Virtual Learning Community (VLC)  is a collaborative effort of all of North Carolina’s Community Colleges to increase the quality and availability of online learning and support services.  The Developmental Math Redesign Program is designed to be used with students striving to meet college entrance requirements. NCLOR has resently imported the resources used in the VLC developmental math courses. Theses developmental math resources have also been tagged to the appropriate DMA 010-080 student learning outcomes.

The resources from this series may be used in the following courses: DMA-010, DMA-020, DMA-030, DMA-040, DMA-050, DMA-060, DMA-070, and DMA080.

To search for these resources, go to Browse by NCCCS Combined Course Library > Course Subjects C – D >and then click on DMA -Developmental Mathematics. You can also search by student learning outcome by  going to Search> Click on “Within”> choose Student Learning Outcomes from the advanced search.

Khan Academy Resource Series Added to NCLOR

The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. This series includes over 1600 math,  biology, chemistry, finance, physics, and history videos tutorials. Each video is a digestible chunk, approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

This material is directly suited for supplementing standard lesson activities and gives the student the opportunity to review complicated procedures many times.

To access the Khan Academy resource series:

1. log into the NCLOR  < www.explorethelor.org > or through your institution’s learning management system
2. navigate to the Browse by Resource Series area
3. click on the Khan Academy series.
