Khan Academy collection updated with Web Programming Series

Today, over 400 new resources were added into the Khan Academy collection within the NCLOR. The new content focused around computing and specifically about web programming. Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. This resource addition adds to the 2,500 + resources already available in the NCLOR from Khan Academy.

The web programming resources added includes content in the following areas: HTML, Cascade Style Sheets, SQL & Databases, Games & Visualizations, Simulations and JQuery.

NOVA ELI Open Courses Added to the NCLOR

Today, over 830 resources from the Extended Learning Institute (ELI) from Northern Virginia Community College System (NOVA) were added to the NCLOR’s open educational resources collection.

Pioneering zero textbook cost courses and degree programs since 2012, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is the first community college to fully share its OER degree pathways and courses for others to use and build on.

NOVA’s Extended Learning Institute (ELI) and Lumen Learning have teamed up to make these courses and degree pathways broadly available to the education community. These courses fulfill all requirements for NOVA Associate’s degrees in General Studies and Social Sciences. Published with open, Creative Commons licenses, anyone can freely use, revise, remix and re-purpose the courses.

Example: Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts – Using Excel

The resources from eight NOVA curriculum courses were added. The courses added were: Principles of Macroeconomics, Introduction to the Study of Religion, Music Appreciation, Mathematics for the Liberal Arts II, Mathematics for the Liberal Arts I, College Composition I, Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts, and Introduction to Communication.

The NCCCS courses that these resource may supplement are: MAT3713, MAT110, MAT122, MAT142, MAT143, MAT152, MAT252, MAT141, MAT167, MAT263, ECO252, REL110, MUS110, DMA050, DMA030, CIS110, COM110, and ENG110.

Integration of NCLOR with Softchalk

It is now possible to add the NCLOR as a repository in Softchalk 5 & 6.  Many NCCCS colleges are already using Softchalk but in case you are unfamiliar with it. Softchalk is a powerful web lesson editor that lets you easily create engaging, interactive web lessons for your e-learning classroom. It has the ability to add media directly from learning object repositories.  The following video tutorial will demonstrate how to  add the NCLOR as a media source repository in Softchalk.

Important Notes:

1. You must have a NCLOR contributor account for the main interface in order to use the Softchalk integration.
2. Only items available to guest can be imported to Softchalk projects.
3. Softchalk will only link to item summary pages in the NCLOR.

Harvard University Open Learning Initiative Resource Series Added to the NCLOR

The Harvard University Extension School’s Open Learning Initiative resource series includes 8 noncredit courses featuring Harvard faculty. This 194 item series is comprised of courses in disciplines such as: the classics, English, computer science, mathematics and history. All courses include lecture videos but some may include links to lecture notes and/or problem sets.

To access this resource series:

1. log into the NCLOR  < www.explorethelor.org > or through your institution’s learning management system (LMS)
2. navigate to the Browse by Resource Series area
3. click on the Harvard Open Learning Initiative series.

MIT Open CourseWare Material Added to NCLOR

This series is a collection of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology OpenCourseWare course materials that reflect undergraduate and graduate subjects taught at MIT. The resources can be complete courses, with audio/ video lectures, assessments and exams, lecture notes or supplemental resources such as lab manuals.  Currently, there are six complete MIT courses uploaded to the NCLOR. Those courses are: Introduction to Biology, Principles of Chemical Science, Physics I: Classical Mechanics, Single Variable Calculus, Introduction to Computer Science and Programming and Introduction to Psychology. More courses will be added later. Also available in the MIT resource series is the MIT Digital Lab Techniques Manual. This manual is a collection of videos that show how to complete various procedures in a laboratory environment.

To review the MIT items log into the NCLOR (www.explorethelor.org) or log into your institution’s LMS and click on Browse by Resource Series and then MIT OpenCourseWare. You can sort by course or manually.
