Wisc-Online INTERFACE and GAMMA+ content added to OER collection

The NCLOR has added content from two new Wisc-Online projects. Totaling more than 900+ learning resources, the additions are from the Wisconsin Technical College System and Fox Valley Technical College.  The projects are the work products from a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. The projects added to the NCLOR were:

• INTERFACE is a statewide project with participation from all 16 colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System to develop, improve, and expand adult educational training pathways to careers in information technology-related occupations in Business, Information Technology, Healthcare, Logistics, Automation, and Manufacturing.
• The GAMMA+ project is designed to help users learn faster and better. College faculty members write mobile learning apps and flashcards for key advanced manufacturing programs.

The topics covered in these projects are; Business administration, Change management, Computer fundamentals, Computer programming, Database development and management, Electrical engineering, Industrial engineering, Knowledge management, Mathematics, Networking Security, Trade and industrial, Web technologies, and Welding.

The projects include tutorial learning objects and flashcard activities for self assessment.  All content is open and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License

UCI Open Content added to OER collection

Today, seventy resources from UCI Open was added to the open educational resource series collection in the NCLOR. The University of California, Irvine’s UCI Open is a web-based repository of various UC Irvine courses and video lectures from UC Irvine faculty, seminar participants, and instructional staff. While the great majority of courses are drawn from graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs, some were originally produced under grant funding to serve specific needs in California and elsewhere. UCI Open is open and available to the world for free.

The resources added in this series are complete courses that include materials such as; lecture videos, presentations, handouts, and practice assessments. The course resources in this series are from disciplines that include: Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Social Ecology, and Social Sciences.

NCLOR Khan Academy Series Updated with Engineering Resources

This week the Khan Academy collection in the NCLOR was updated to included more electrical engineering resources. In fact, over 260 items were added to the collection with topics that included: amplifiers, circuit analysis, electricity and magnetism, electrostatics, semiconductor devices, reverse engineering, and signals & systems. The content also included resources on robotics like how to make home-made robots and Lego robotics.

These additional resources join a large collection already in the NCLOR that include content in math,  biology, chemistry, finance, physics, and history. The Khan Academy is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation award winning not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better. Each video in this series is a digestible chunk of information, approximately 10 minutes long, closed captioned, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

Science Friday Series Added to NCLOR

Today, the NCLOR added a 100+ video series from Science Friday (SciFri). For 25 years SciFri introduced top scientists to public radio listeners, and reminded them how much fun it is to learn something new. But it is more than just a radio show. They produce award-winning digital videos, original web articles, and educational resources for teachers and informal educators. All of the work is independently produced by the Science Friday Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the public’s access to science and scientific information. Public Radio International (PRI) distributes the radio show, which you can catch on public radio stations across the U.S.

The videos in this series include topics in the subjects of: Arts, Biology, Chemistry, Design, Earth Science, Engineering, Food Science, Health, and Physics.

Emerging Technology Resources Added to the NCLOR

Technology is penetrating our lives in various ways, shapes and forms. It can be expected that the flow of tech innovations will continue into the future and create job opportunities for those willing to invest in the skills to master them.

In that effort, the NCLOR staff has compiled a list of available resources that showcases few emerging technologies fields. The NCLOR staff has created a series showcases the resources in the NCLOR about some new and emerging job fields.

More UNC-TV & PBS LearningMedia resources added to NCLOR

This week, the  UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia resources were updated in the NCLOR. Over 2,300 resources were added to the 14,000 resources already available. These PBS Learning Media resources are made available to North Carolina Community College users through a partnership between UNC-TV and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The collection is closed and can only be made available to current NCCCS users in North Carolina.

NCCCS users will have access to over 16,200 media-rich resources especially designed for teachers and students including self-guided lessons, lesson plans, videos, interactives, and hundreds of images. Some of the content added in this update include video clips from series like; NOVA, FRONTLINE, American Experience, PBS NewsHour, and Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson, just to name a few.

Operation Link Robotic Resources added to the NCLOR

 Operation Link is an AmeriCorps, in partnership with East Carolina University, S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) mentoring program for elementary and middle grades students, with a priority given to serving military youth. Sixty-five mentors and approximately 500 K-12 students work together to explore S.T.E.M. concepts using Vex IQ robots.
The resources included in this series are materials that can supplement a VEX IQ Robotics program. To use the curriculum, you will need a VEX IQ robot which can be purchased at many online retailers.

There are 15 resources available in the subjects of Automation and Robotics and Electrical Engineering. All of the curriculum created by Operation Link are Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported Licensed.

UNC-TV & PBS LearningMedia resources added to NCLOR

Today, the first of two sets of UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia resources were made available in the NCLOR. Over 6,000 resources were included in the first set with another 12,000 resources soon to be made available. These PBS Learning Media resources are made available to North Carolina Community College users through a partnership between UNC-TV and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The collection is closed and can only be made available to current NCCCS users in North Carolina.

NCCCS users will have access to over 18,000 media-rich resources especially designed for teachers and students including self-guided lessons, lesson plans, videos, interactives,hundreds of images from the Bridgeman Art Library, over 700 Spanish language videos, science resources developed by UNC –TV, and popular PBS series such as NOVA, FRONTLINE, American Experience, and more.
