NOVA ELI Open Courses Added to the NCLOR
Today, over 830 resources from the Extended Learning Institute (ELI) from Northern Virginia Community College System (NOVA) were added to the NCLOR’s open educational resources collection.
Pioneering zero textbook cost courses and degree programs since 2012, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is the first community college to fully share its OER degree pathways and courses for others to use and build on.
NOVA’s Extended Learning Institute (ELI) and Lumen Learning have teamed up to make these courses and degree pathways broadly available to the education community. These courses fulfill all requirements for NOVA Associate’s degrees in General Studies and Social Sciences. Published with open, Creative Commons licenses, anyone can freely use, revise, remix and re-purpose the courses.
Example: Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts – Using Excel
The resources from eight NOVA curriculum courses were added. The courses added were: Principles of Macroeconomics, Introduction to the Study of Religion, Music Appreciation, Mathematics for the Liberal Arts II, Mathematics for the Liberal Arts I, College Composition I, Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts, and Introduction to Communication.
The NCCCS courses that these resource may supplement are: MAT3713, MAT110, MAT122, MAT142, MAT143, MAT152, MAT252, MAT141, MAT167, MAT263, ECO252, REL110, MUS110, DMA050, DMA030, CIS110, COM110, and ENG110.

- Log into the NCLOR and click on the More button on the left menu bar. Then click the Resource Series link and then NOVA Open Courses.

New Intelecom Video Series Available in NCLOR
Today, three new subject areas from the INTELECOM video collection have been added to the NCLOR. The subject areas added include Adult Education, Allied Health and Philosophy. Over 780 new videos and video clips have been included in this addition. The new content includes nationally recognized documentary series such as: Crossroads Café, Madison Heights, Lifelines, On Common Ground, The Human Condition, and The Examined Life. All videos content included in this content are closed captioned and are available for viewing at the resource summary page and the attachment level for easy inclusion into LMS based courses. Crossroads Café

This English language learner (ELL) series blends comedy and drama to teach English to speakers of other languages. The stories feature characters whose lives intersect at Crossroad Cafe, a neighborhood restaurant, where together they experience the struggles, conflicts, joys and victories of everyday life. Each episode features “Word Play,” an animated segment demonstrating a specific language function. Culture Clips is a video series included in Crossroads Café and made up of 26 documentary-style short segments on various aspects of life in the U.S.
Madison Heights
Subject Area: Adult Education

Ten half-hour dramatic episodes. Madison Heights centers around a hypothetical middle school and focuses on one or more families struggling to overcome adversity with courage, dignity and hope. Each episode addresses a particular problem, such as illiteracy, alcoholism, and welfare.
On Common Ground

On Common Ground is anthology of stories that unfolds in a City Hall of a medium-sized city. This 15 episode series present dramatic stories which take on controversial issues, usually in situations that lack a single right answer. Each episode concludes with a relevant video of a key event from U.S. history. Individual lessons focus on such crucial issues as racial polarization, extremism and freedom of speech, individual rights versus the public good, separation of powers, and checks and balances.
Lifelines

Lifelines is a ten-part documentary videos series for family literacy and adult education. Inspiring stories of families working together provide meaningful, and motivating learning experiences for today’s parent learner.
The Human Condition

The Human Condition takes a comprehensive view of health care, focusing on nine topic areas: The Fabric of Health, Who is at Risk?, The life Cycle, Emotional and Mental Health, Sexual Health, Health and Chemical Substances, Health Risks: The Role of Heredity and Lifestyle, Promoting Well-Being Through Fitness and Nutrition, and The Individual in the Health/Medical Marketplace. These 26 video episodes (349 clips) combine interviews with leading health professionals, dynamic location footage, and illustrative case studies, to bring each lesson to life.
The Examined Life

The series “The Examined Life” offers learners an in-depth analysis of the wisdom of the Western world, The Examined Life studies the “Great Questions” that have intrigued philosophers from antiquity to the present. Using writings of past philosophers and interviews with more than 50 contemporary thinkers, the course episodes underscore how these great questions – What is art? Does God exist? What is the meaning of life? Does the end justify the means? – still reverberate in society today. The series includes 26 episodes (136 clips) and 15 interviews with leading contemporary thinkers (201 clips).

Eight New NROC Collections Added to the NCLOR
Available to NCCCS Only
The content available in the NCLOR from NROC has been updated with eight new collections. The eight new collections are: The Concord Consortium Collection, NMSU Learning Games Lab Collection, Mt. San Jacinto College Collection, Chattanooga State Technical College Collection, BioInteractive Collection, APES in a Box Collection, Virginia Historical Society Collection, and NASA eClips Collection. The NROC Project provides core academic rich multimedia content–videos, animations, and simulations–on general education subjects to middle-school, high-school teachers, college professors and their students. Over 490 new resources have been added to the NROC collection. These resources join the other 2,800+ items already available for NCCCS faculty use.
The Concord Consortium is a collection of Revolutionary Digital Learning items for Science, Engineering, and Math. The Concord Consortium is a nonprofit educational research and development organization based in Concord, Massachusetts. The Mt.San Jacinto College collection provides Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of the Trade course. This course is designed for anyone who wants to become a better writer. If you need to write more clearly for work, prepare for a placement test for a college, or improve your skills for current writing projects, this class is beneficial. New Mexico State University Learning Games Lab collection offers Math Snacks: Animations and Games for Middle School. Math Snacks are short animations and mini-games designed to present mathematics in a very different way. Math Snacks give students, especially those who don’t particularly like math, another way to look at math concepts. APES in a BOX collection contain AP Environmental Science Review courses. APES in a Box is an all-inclusive study guide for the AP Environmental Science exam. APES in a BOX has been updated to reflect changes in the 2011 APES Exam! APES in a Box was written by experienced APES teachers Benjy Wood and Dave Holbert. NASA eClips™ are short, relevant educational video segments. These videos inspire and engage students, helping them see real world connections. NASA eClips™ offer unlimited flexibility in the classroom for timing, sequencing and pacing instruction to meet the needs of students and classroom instructors. The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources has added a large collection of its educational resources to the NCLOR. Topics included in this collection are: Agriculture, Anthropology, Architecture, Business, Civics, Cultural studies, Government, Journalism, Literature, Performing arts, Public health, Religion, Sociology, State history, Transportation, and Visual arts. There are over 2100+ resources available in this collection.

Notre Dame University OpenCourseWare added to the NCLOR
Today, fifty new courses from the Notre Dame University OpenCourseWare were added to the NCLOR. The Notre Dame OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a free and open digital publication of course materials. By offering free, high-quality course materials to the world, OCW strives to overcome the barriers geography, economics, age and language present to the spread of knowledge.

Princeton University Video Lecture Series Added to NCLOR
Today, 40 new video lectures were added to the NCLOR from Princeton University. These resources are video captures of their famous public lecture series and include lectures given by Tom Brokaw, Noam Chomsky, Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and Dr. Cornel West just to name a few. The subjects included in this series are broad and include: Political Science, Finance, Biology, Literature, Religion, and Physics.

Open Yale Courses Resource Series Updated
The Yale Open Courses Resource Series was updated today with 17 new courses. Open Yale Courses provide free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The new course resources include all video lectures and course syllabi for the year the courses were offered at the institution. The list of the Yale courses along with the recommended NCCCS course the resource may enhance are outlined in the chart below.
