Wake Tech. CC NEH Grant resources now available in the NCLOR

As part of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Division at Wake Technical Community College has developed and implemented a project, “America’s Wars: Individual Experience and Cultural Memory.” These resources have been made available in the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR.

The goal of this project is to render more visible the experiences of military veterans and their families by incorporating their perspectives into humanities courses. Additionally, the America’s Wars project aims to help WTCC veterans make the difficult transition from military to college. This project also strives to present an accurate depiction of the nature of war and what soldiers endure physically and psychologically in order to foster both a better understanding of veterans and to educate students who may be considering military service or transitioning from it.

By incorporating war-related materials into English, history, psychology, and philosophy courses, this project promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity to the experiences of others and enhances students’ critical thinking by helping them understand the importance of questioning prevailing beliefs and master narratives.

Khan Academy Series Updated w/ Computer Sci, History & Grammar content

The NCLOR’s  Khan Academy resource series has been updated with 94 new video tutorial resources.  All of the videos available from Khan Academy are now available in a tutorial-based format with built in navigation. Many of the resources have been tagged to an NCCCS combined course library course number.  The disciplines covered in this collection update include Computer Science, U.S. History, and Grammar.  Each discipline can be sorted by subject and topic.

Each tutorial in this series is a digestible chunk of information, approximately 10 minutes long, closed captioned, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

Some of the topics covered in the tutorials are:

• Computer Science – Algorithms, Cryptography, Information theory, the Internet
• U.S. History – Colonial America, Pre-revolution, Early republic, Civil War …more
• Grammar – Nouns, Verbs, Pronouns, Preposition, Conjunctions …more

UNC-TV & PBS LearningMedia resources added to NCLOR for NCCCS

Today, the UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia series was updated with 1800+ new resources available in the NCLOR. This update joins the over 16,000 resources included in the series. These PBS Learning Media resources are made available to North Carolina Community College users through a partnership between UNC-TV and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The collection is closed and can only be made available to current NCCCS users in North Carolina.

NCCCS users will have access to media-rich resources especially designed for teachers and students including self-guided lessons, lesson plans, videos, interactives, science resources developed by UNC –TV, and popular PBS series such as NOVA, FRONTLINE, American Experience, and more.

10,000 New UNC-TV & PBS LearningMedia Resources Available for NCCCS

Today, the second set of UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia resources were made available in the NCLOR. Over 6,000 resources were included in the first set with another 10,000 resources available today. Today, the first of two sets of UNC-TV PBS LearningMedia resources were made available in the NCLOR. Over 6,000 resources were included in the first set with another 12,000 resources soon to be made available. These PBS Learning Media resources are made available to North Carolina Community College users through a partnership between UNC-TV and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The collection is closed and can only be made available to current NCCCS users in North Carolina.

NCCCS users will have access to over 18,000 media-rich resources especially designed for teachers and students including self-guided lessons, lesson plans, videos, interactives,hundreds of images from the Bridgeman Art Library, over 700 Spanish language videos, science resources developed by UNC –TV, and popular PBS series such as NOVA, FRONTLINE, American Experience, and more.

Open SUNY Textbooks Added to NCLOR

Today, 10 new eTextbooks were added to the open educational resources collection of the NCLOR. Open SUNY Textbooks is an open access textbook publishing initiative established by State University of New York libraries and supported by SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grants. This pilot initiative publishes high-quality, cost-effective course resources by engaging faculty as authors and peer-reviewers, and libraries as publishing service and infrastructure.

The pilot launched in 2012, providing an editorial framework and service to authors, students and faculty, and establishing a community of practice among libraries.

The subjects included in this resource series are: Academic Success, Computer Programming, Education, Humanities, Information Literacy, Mathematics, Psychology, Public Administration, and Science.

The ebooks in this collection are all made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License

Khan Academy Resource Series Updated in NCLOR

The NCLOR’s  Khan Academy Resource Series was updated with over 2,500 new video tutorial resources, with a total resource count to over 4,500. This open educational resource series has now been promoted to a collection. All of the videos available from Khan Academy are now available within the NCLOR. Many of the videos have been tagged to a NCCCS combined course library course number.  The disciplines covered in this collection include: Economics and Finance, Humanities, Math, and Science. Each discipline can be sorted by subject, topic or sub-topic.

The Khan Academy is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation award winning not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better. Each video in this series is a digestible chunk of information, approximately 10 minutes long, closed captioned, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As a result of a site redesign at Khan Academy, new resource urls were created. This means the old Khan Academy resources have been archived in the system and will soon be deleted. Please update any of your Khan Academy links with these new versions.

SBCTC Open Course Library Phase II Courses added to NCLOR

The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) has updated the Open Course Library, which is a collection of expertly developed educational materials for 81 of the state’s highest-enrolled college courses. The materials are freely available online under an open license for use by the state’s 34 public community and technical colleges, four-year colleges and universities, and anyone else worldwide. The subjects included in this update  are: Business, Communications, English, Fine Arts, Humanities, Mathematics,  and Science.

This resource series contains the IMS Common Cartridge files of the Open Course Library catalog. These files are compatible with many learning management systems (LMS) and contain all of the course content including syllabi, course activities, readings, and assessments. Some courses have content available via Google Docs which enables users to download the course resources directly to their Google account.

Khan Academy Resource Series Added to NCLOR

The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. This series includes over 1600 math,  biology, chemistry, finance, physics, and history videos tutorials. Each video is a digestible chunk, approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

This material is directly suited for supplementing standard lesson activities and gives the student the opportunity to review complicated procedures many times.

Bill Gates calls the Khan Academy “the future of education”.

New Smithsonian Education Resource Series Added to NCLOR

A Smithsonian Education resource series has been added to the all account holders collection of the NCLOR. This series focuses around the Smithsonian’s “Smithsonian in Your Classroom” and “Smithsonian Art to Zoo” publications. The series is targeted for K-12 students and provides lesson plans for activities that include subjects such as: Art & Design, Culture & Humanities, Language Arts, and Science & Technology. There are 104 resources in this series and range from PDF files of lesson plans to interactive web activities.

You can find the resources by logging into the NCLOR (www.nclor.org) or your institution’s learning management system and using the Browse by Resource Series area. You can also type “Smithsonian Education” in the basic search field from anywhere in the NCLOR to find the items.
